The 'Yellow Boat' is one of my most popular pictures. It is quite small - reproduced close to actual size. A freely painted representation which, unusually for me, was constructed with the aid of a few lines of sepia chalk. I nearly always paint directly without guide lines of charcoal or pencil; which I find detrimental to the flowing nature of the watercolour.

'A row of cows stared blankly down from the bank - my arrival exciting them to a few moments of standing still. Half hidden by foliage, the silhouettes looked uncannily like cowboys - their ears sticking out like Stetson brims.' (From 'Red Admiral - A Voyage Around Cornwall.')

A single swan, an imposing subject. The serene poser, with strong reflection, required only a portion of slipway with swishing surge to complete the composition. The builder, who spent many an hour renovating the slip, purchased the painting because he could 'hear' the slurping water.

A moody painting - still; reflective. There is a suggestion of clutter on the harbour wall created with a few touches. It is one of my favourite paintings. The old lifeboat station over the wall was built at that 'launching' angle.

Another very small painting with watery water. The new Co-op has now blended with its surroundings - thanks to the seagulls and elements. At first it stood out like a sore thumb, and I found it easy to overlook.

An overcast day; boats that can't float; smoke rising in the background. Not a gloomy picture though - let's emphasize the subtlety. The pleasant surface is due to an interesting printing paper. Though thin and difficult to use, becoming waterlogged at a touch, it is worth the effort - if you have plenty of drying time.

There is a great deal going on in the 'Orange Cottage' painting - strong tones with a clear brooding sky. It is very strong for a watercolour - often mistaken for an oil or acrylic work.

I have painted many storms and rough seas in watercolour and find the medium perfect for the task of portraying atmosphere and movement. The almost monochrome arrangements have plenty of power, especially if a 'static' detail is present - well done that lighthouse. Click here for a book excerpt featuring the Storm painting |

The most prominent feature of Mevagissey built on rocks between the inner and outer harbours. A dramatic structure that has featured strongly in many of my paintings over the years - as the main component or powerful backdrop.

The imposing gates hold back a short length of canal - not sufficient to link with the Tamar, which was the original idea of the builders - see Red Admiral, A Voyage Around Cornwall. |

| The blobs of window are dabbed and left unmolested. The boats have little detail. That which is boldly stated around the blank areas has been carefully considered and positioned. Individual shapes though random looking appear rather 'boaty'. There is enough 'action'. Had I expanded the view, there would have been 'more of the same' - a dilution of interest! | ||||

The sea is rarely so calm. The simple composition of this very large watercolour has the feeling of an interior scene - perhaps a Roman spa. It is, in fact, a concrete silo (or was) for loading crushed stone 'railed' in from a nearby quarry. Without perspective, the little boy and boat inform of scale while adding that important touch of colour. Click here for a book excerpt from Red Admiral featuring the Porthoustock painting |

Edward worked on this website with his older brother, Toby, who built 'Big Nose' for him. We rarely get enough snow for a snowball, so I was pleased to capture that happy time. In watercolour the paper equals white, so the merest stain of subtlety is required to eliminate starkness.

Dragging a wet loaded brush quickly over an extremely rough surface will leave the paper virtually unmolested. (The choice of paper plays a part - some are too absorbent.) Repeated dragging will cover the surface. At the top of the watercolour, several colours run together, having been introduced quickly. The softness of the distant foliage is contrasted by the sharp, dried edges of the near water treatment.

A sparkling picture; not over fussy. I am pleased with the dotty representation of happy holidaymakers on the beach. Swift brushwork over the harbour water has left untouched speckles of white paper representing the sun glinting.

The construction of this painting - action at the top, with an expanse of simple, wet sand (easy to say) below, is a format that pleases me. An equal distribution of the elements would have lessened the power.

The title is not a place name - though I wouldn't mind building a log cabin there. Fresh, serene and very green, the scene is typical of locations mid Tamar. The painting 'demonstrates' two of the main watercolour techniques. Wet colour taken over a dry surface to create a precise edge - edge of pool against the bank / light river divide. The side of a large, soft, loaded brush has been 'caressed' over the textured surface to indicate the foliage effect on the tree to the left.

I love this early painting (1984). Created with a limited palette, it exudes a gentle power. The extreme perspective is to 'blame'. The asymmetrical aspect adds extra interest. The largely unpainted light figure, along with the column, claims your attention.

The tranquillity suited my disposition - I had just completed the sea element of my circumnavigation of Cornwall. It was a pleasant period of calm before I attempted the cliff haul (described in Red Admiral, A Voyage Around Cornwall). The pigments, settling into the paper’s texture, create the granular effect. Swift, wet work on a level surface is required.
