Exhibition of Watercolours & Large Oils

I most recently exhibited at The Eden Project, Cornwall 28 Oct - 3 Nov 2007. In recent years my solo shows have featured watercolour. Usually, the nature of that medium precludes very large works. In this latest project I exhibited, along with a collection of watercolours, a series of large oil paintings. (I exhibited thirteen oils, up to 6 1/2 x 5 feet). What better venue for an exhibition of giant semi-abstract butterflies and Cornish harbours than Eden.

Red Admiral, Blue Boson Red Admiral,Blue Boson
(5'2" by 6'4" Oil on Canvas.) My son Edward's favorite painting (it hung briefly in the sitting room). An enormous, colourful and energetic picture. For full appreciation, it has to be seen full size.

ORIGINAL AVAILABLE

Sunrise, Mevagissey
(30" by 30" Oil on Canvas.) A powerful and restful composition. You never have to squint at a painting of the sun, but the suggestion of piercing light can be achieved by increasing the surrounding darkness. A picture for meditation - to search the 'near black nothing' - to unravel the mystery.

St Ives St Ives
(10" x 10 1/2" Watercolour.) A sparkling picture; not over fussy. I am pleased with the dotty representation of happy holidaymaker's on the beach. Swift brushwork over the harbour water has left untouched speckles of white paper representing the sun glinting on the water.

Sparkling Tamar
(6" x 7" Watercolour.) Dragging a wet loaded brush quickly over an extremely rough surface has left the paper virtually unmolested. At the top of the watercolour, several colours run together, having been introduced quickly. The softness of the distant foliage is contrasted by the sharp, dried edges of the near water treatment.

Swans at Mevagissey Swans at Mevagissey
(13" x 14" Watercolour) My dinghy was launched and retrieved at the slip, round the corner from the Gallery, a few times. I think the swans make a more elegant addition. Creating the swans by painting darker colour behind is a bit tricky - much better to my mind than painting dark lines round everything. What sort of duck is the little fella top left, I wonder.

Lostwithiel
(15" x 19" Watercolour.) An old favorite. An exercise in tone. The possibility of creating the darkest of darks in watercolour, set me in pursuit of this difficult medium. This is the very pool where, 21 years later, I would step into Epic for the first time, before 'circumnavigating'.

Red Admiral Red Admiral
(4' 6" x 5' Oil on Canvas.) Having red admirals and peacocks decorating the buddleia outside my studio, it is not surprising that over the years I have painted them many times - six inches to six feet, in watercolour and oil.
